THE ARTIST BEHIND AMVIA

Stone Chun Shi 石村 STONE

Painting, music and a life of finding a language of one’s own.

Stone Chun Shi is a New York–based artist and musician. Born in Nanjing, he moved to New York in 1987. His practice has crossed painting, music, moving image and design, with Stonecube becoming a sustained exploration of color, material and perception.

Built by the artist

amvia is personally architected, coded and trained by contemporary artist Stone Chun Shi (STONE).

Drawing on decades of painting and musical practice, Stone continuously refines the system’s emotional depth, visual rhythm and luminous color—bringing an artist’s intuition into dialogue with computation and the spaces we inhabit.

Across cultures and disciplines

His biography records participation in New York’s contemporary art scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s, followed by exhibitions in Europe and Taiwan. In the 1990s, painting developed alongside rock music and television. A 1995 Los Angeles Times profile documents his MTV Mandarin hosting under the name Schutze.

Stonecube: color taking form

Around 2010, Stone began developing the oil-paint language known as Stone Oil Cube, or Stonecube, through a series depicting currency. Built from individually applied, raised units of oil color, these works change with viewing distance: close inspection reveals texture and discrete color; a more distant view brings an image into focus. His subjects have included currency, cultural figures, spiritual imagery and interpretations of earlier paintings.

One Buck extended this practice into public space. Stone assembled paintings of both sides of a dollar bill into a double-sided work and presented it on a trailer in New York. Meniscus documented the work at Artexpo in 2018. The project brought painting into an encounter with the city and its everyday viewers.

Painting, Flow Music and attention

In his current artist statement, Stone describes Stonecube through energy, reconstructed perception and “no-time consciousness.” These are terms of his artistic philosophy. Memor Museum’s 2026 exhibition, Stonecube: The Initial Language of No-Time Consciousness, brought paintings and archival materials into dialogue with his improvised Flow Music, exploring rhythm and the experience of time across media.

Artist DNA

At the heart of Amvia is the artistic vision of its founder, Stone Chun Shi. His aesthetic judgment draws on decades of creative practice and a deep engagement with art history across cultures and movements.

Stone is especially drawn to artists who developed distinctive visual languages and reshaped the art of their time—from Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo to Cézanne, Van Gogh, Matisse and Paul Klee; from Kandinsky and Mondrian to Pollock, de Kooning, Rothko, Warhol and Basquiat, alongside Eastern masters such as Shitao and Katsushika Hokusai.

His understanding of their artistic ideas, use of color, composition and visual expression informs Amvia’s creative direction. This broad artistic foundation allows the platform to explore diverse visual languages, bringing your space, photographs and personal stories into artworks with meaning, atmosphere and a sense of belonging.
